Inside All in Vain: How Aces Low Built a Nu Metal Breakup Song Over Discord

Six Writers, a Broken Promise and a Discord Mix From a Band Formed in 2025

The mix of All in Vain never happened in a studio control room. Aces Low did all of the mixing over Discord. Jacob Reeves, who also produced and mastered the song, holds the mixing credit. It was a practical choice for a young band. It also suits a nu metal debut about distance. The song looks back at a relationship from the far side of walking away.

Aces Low’s debut single is in the playlist below, and the Aces Low profile keeps every feature our sites have run on the band. All in Vain reached this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Hit play on the first song the band wrote together, then read on for how it was made.

Aces Low Wrote All in Vain as Their First Song Together After Starting Out as a Covers Band

Aces Low formed in 2025 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The members shared a love of classic nu metal and Y2K style. For a while it was mostly a covers band, with musicians rotating in and out of the line-up. All in Vain marks the point where that changed. It is the first song the members wrote together. It then came out on 22 May 2026 as their debut single.

Fittingly for a band called Aces Low, the members are named after a deck of cards. CJ is the Wildcard, Nathan the Ace of Hearts, Jay the Ace of Clubs, Nic the Ace of Diamonds and Cross the Ace of Spades. Jacob, who produced the single, is the Jack.

Meanwhile, the credits fill in who does what. CJ is credited with the vocals. Nathan Barton plays lead guitar, while J and Jacob Reeves play rhythm guitar. Cross plays bass and Nic Dunn plays drums, and Reeves also adds programming. Six writers share the songwriting credit: Charles Chacón II, Christian Cudd, Joel Patterson, Nicholas Dunn, Jacob Reeves and Nathan Barton. Josh Camacho recorded the song, with Corrina Young as assistant engineer.

The Staind Record Behind the Sound of All in Vain

The band points to one record as its model: Dysfunction by Staind. It came out on 13 April 1999 through Flip and Elektra. Terry Date produced it with the band, and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit was co-producer. At first, Durst turned Staind down, put off by the cover of their debut album. He changed his mind after seeing them play. Eventually, Dysfunction reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and No. 74 on the Billboard 200. It was certified double platinum in 2004.

All in Vain takes its weight from that era, too. At five minutes and five seconds, it pairs expressive melody with the raw heaviness of 2000s rock and metal. In this way it draws on nu metal and post-grunge at once.

What All in Vain Answers for Listeners Who Had to Walk Away From Someone They Loved

The lyric opens alone, at night: Alone I lay, in my bed. Then it moves quickly from hurt to judgement. The other person walks down a “tainted path”, while the narrator takes the high road and does not go back. By the chorus the decision is made: Walked away, despite my pain / A promise made, all in vain.

In short, that chorus is the answer the song gives. It does not pretend that leaving was easy, and it does not ask for the other person back. I stand strong, you never shaped me, it goes on. The last verse then names what changed the narrator’s mind: hidden motives behind every tender kiss. Near the end, the lyric breaks off for an aside: Ok, look, look, I’ll make this really easy for you. Then it lands on Don’t say you miss me, and the chorus returns one last time.

Of course, post-grunge has an older answer to the same question. Three Days Grace released I Hate Everything About You on 28 April 2003, from their self-titled debut album. Adam Gontier has described it as a song about something in your life you are wasting time on. It reached No. 2 on the Alternative chart and No. 4 on Mainstream Rock. In June 2025 it also passed one billion Spotify streams. All in Vain covers the same ground more than two decades later.

From the Dallas-Fort Worth Area to Austin Rock Radio

So far, the single has also reached radio. Austin’s 93.7 KLBJ, a mainstream rock station that also streams on iHeartRadio, has played All in Vain. For a self-released debut by a band that started out playing other people’s songs, that is quick progress.

On NewMusic.News the single now sits in our Metal, Progressive Metal and Post-Metal playlist. It suits listeners who seek out independent and self-released music. It also suits anyone who still keeps the rock radio of the 2000s close.

From the NewMusic.News curator team: “Aces Low call All in Vain a prelude to an upcoming project, and as a first look at six writers working together it already has a clear point of view. That is why it went into our metal playlist.”

Stream All in Vain on Spotify, then follow Aces Low across platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, YouTube channel, Instagram, TikTok, Linktree and the official site.
